9) South-East Asia, Cambodia: Udong Mountain

We had booked a trip to Udong mountain for the second day of our Cambodian tour but when I booked it back in the Netherlands still, my credit card got blocked for fraud. But by the time we went there, I had forgotten for which of the things we booked I got the card blocked so when the day came we went downstairs of the hotel lobby where they should’ve picked us up for the trip, but nobody came 😀 We sat there and waited and at some point, I remembered about the bank card and realized that this must’ve been the trip it got blocked for. We then decided to book a tuk-tuk thinking it would be a great idea to enjoy some of the countryside from an open vehicle. HUUUGE MISTAKE. The air was so dirty that we barely managed to breathe and through our clothes. I had a feeling that I had inhaled a whole bucket of ash, felt the taste somehow from within my lungs, hard to describe it but i could feel it. Another problem was that we had no idea where we were going since it was supposed to be an organized trip, so we just gave the man the city name and he used his GPS and took a number of wrong turns because he kept his GPS showing North always up and thus, sometimes he had to turn left but on his GPS looked right and he turned right. At some point, we were in the middle of nothing when i saw his GPS and realized what he had done 😀 We turned and eventually arrived at the right place BUT we had no idea which temple was the one i’ve seen in pictures and how to find it or what its name was AND the town looked quite dead and no cars and only local people, I started getting worried where are we and how are we going to get back. When we asked the guy about the place by showing him a photo he just shrugged and we told him to leave us at an uphill road close to a temple we decided to check out. He, LUCKILY, proposed to wait for us and take us back and we agreed. So he waited, the temple we checked was NOT the one we were looking for, but was still nice. At some point, however, from the top of the temple’s hill, I saw THE ONE. You could see the actual place I saw in the photos and I took a photo and showed it to the tuk-tuk driver and asked him to bring us there, he had no clue how but eventually we made it and it was GOOORGEOUS. It was actually a monastery and had beautiful statues outside of people riding different animals like a donkey, cow, bear, tiger and even a dragon. I was so glad we made it and that we had the tuk-tuk driver with us who was willing to wait for us. Should he have left, I don’t know what we would’ve done. Better with lungs full of dist than staying there overnight.
