Egypt’s Golden Empire [Day 4: Kom Ombo & Edfu]

During the night our ship has stopped in Edfu where we went to see the temple of the falcon god Horus, son of Isis and Osiris. The legend says that Isis and her sister Nifties loved Osiris. Isis, Osiris, Seth and Nifties were all brothers and sisters. Osiris and Isis married and Seth envied them because they were too happy together, so he married Nifties. Seth left their house and when he came back Nifties had a kid, obviously not from him, but from Osiris. Seth was angry and decided to kill his brother. He made a coffin which fits Osiris and said that whoever can fit this coffin, it will be a gift for them. Of course it fit Osiris and Seth closed the coffin with his brother alive inside and let it float down the Nile river. Isis wanted to find her husband and she found him alive far away. They were told that if they go back home, Seth will kill his brother again. They went back home and Isis was pregnant. Seth killed Osiris and divided his body in 42 parts – the number of the provinces of Egypt in that time. Isis was scared that Osiris would kill her too and she ran away and found 41 parts of her husband’s body. The heart was in Aswan, that’s why the temple there is called Philae, which means Heart, if I’m not wrong.

After seeing the temple, we went back on the ship, swum in the pool on the top of the ship and enjoyed the view from on the two sides of the river.

Around 17h our ship arrived in Kom Ombo and we went to see another temple, the temple of god Sobek. He was the god of the crocodiles with head of a crocodile and body of a human. They made the temple and realized that this god was a bad one, so to balance the things, they built a second part of the temple for Horus. Now the temple is divided in two halves for each of these Gods.

We finally visited the crocodile museum with more than 20 “dried”/mummified crocodiles inside. And then we went back to our ship 🙂
